What is the Thailand Baht Currency?

Thai Baht CurrencyThe Thai Baht currency is divided into 100 satang. Introduced in 1897 by King Chulalongkorn. Until 1902 the baht was fixed on a silver basis, with the baht equalling 15 grams of silver. The baht was pegged to the US Dollar for almost two decades in the 60's and 70's. The streghtening US economy caused Thailand to re-peg its currency to 25 to the dollar, until the Asian financial crisis in 1997.

Understanding Baht Exchange Rate

Between World War II and 1980 it was fixed to the US Dollar. After the 1997 financial crisis in Asia, western investors lost confidence in securities in East Asia and started to pull out of the Thai Baht. Thailand was fit by this snowball effect and the baht was placed on a floating exchange rate- essentially halving its value. It later stabilized a year later and has since then.
