What is the Japanese Yen?

The Japanese yen is the currency of the country of Japan. ISO code: JPY. It is the 3rd most traded currency in the foreeign exhcange market after the euro and the US dollar. Large quantities of yen are often counted in multiples of 10,000, as is common in east Asian countries.

Banknotes entered circulation in 1872, two years after coins were introduced. The denominations have changed greatly throughout history, between 10 yen adn 10,000 yen.
