What is the Chilean Peso Currency?

The currency of Chile is the peso (CLP). Locally the $ is the symbol. It is subdivided into 100 certavos- but these are not used in day-to-day transactions. Informal names for some banknotes and coins include; gamba for one hundred pesos, quina for five hundred pesos, and  luca for a thousand pesos.

Understanding Chilean Peso Exchange

The Chilean Peso was first introduced in 1817, changing in denominations and matials over the next five decades. Then, in 1885 a gold standard was adopted- aligning the peso to the British pound. The first Chilean paper money was issued in the early 1840's. Later, in the 1920's, the Banco Central del Chile began issuing banknotes, at first in denominations of 5, 10, 50, 100 adn 1000 pesos. The remaining denominations were producted until 1959. The current CLP currency was introduced in 1975.
