What is the Afghan Afghani?

The Afgan Afghani is the currency of Afghanistan, divided into 100 pul, the ISO code denotation is: AFN. First introduced in 1925, the afghani initially contained 9 grams of silver. Almost always determined by market forces--save during World War II. The official exhcange rate was fixed by the Afghan Central Bank in some periods, however. Since 2002, Da Afghanistan Bank has adopted a floating exchange rate regime and has let the exchange rate to be entirely determined by market forces.

Understanding Afghan Currency

Between 2002 and 2003, a new Afgani was introduced with the ISO code of AFN, valued at 43 Afghani to the US dollar. After depreciating during the end of 2004, the Afghani has been appreciating at a steady rate, gaining 8 percent against the US dollar. The trend appears to be driven by the relative stability of the exchange rate since the introduction of the new currency.
